Description

Being Frank: a theatre-based education program about trans and gender diversity, developed by Deakin University in partnership with Transgender Victoria.

The program consists of a short ‘play’, followed by a panel discussion. In the play we follow the journey of a young trans person, family and friends, introducing a variety of different perspectives. The panel discussion features Andrew Eklund from Transgender Victoria, as well as representatives from Deakin and local organisations.

All Deakin staff and students are welcome to come along for some thought-provoking entertainment and to learn about trans and gender diversity.

Background to Being Frank

Unfortunately, societies, communities, groups and individuals don’t always act in ways that protect and support the dignity and rights of all individuals and groups. Those groups who are often discriminated against, including trans and gender-diverse people, display amazing resilience, energy and activism in creating for themselves, the lives that they want, and contributing richly to thriving and diverse communities and society throughout Australia. Affirmation and support from families, friends, services and the wider community, when it is available, is important and valued.

Things are is not always smooth, with raised risks to health and wellbeing for trans and gender diverse people. However, each and all of us can make a difference by how we behave in the different settings of our lives, helping us to move towards a welcoming and inclusive Australia that lives up to the Aussie value of a ‘fair go for all’.

Human Library

As well as the performances of Being Frank, Deakin is organising a Human Library. Book a 15-minute slot to hear a living book tell their story. This is not only a great chance to learn more about ourselves and the stereotypes and assumptions we all hold, but to gain a unique insight into the life and perspectives of another person in our human 'collection' here at Deakin.
